Fabio Leimer onverslaanbaar in eerste GP2-race Abu Dhabi

Fabio Leimer heeft zijn derde GP2-overwinning gehaald tijdens de eerste race in Abu Dhabi. De Zwitserse coureur legde met een sterke openingsronde al het fundament voor de zege en was uiteindelijk zeven seconden eerder bij de finish dan Luiz Razia. Nigel Melker stelde teleur in de eerste race.

Na de eerste ronde had Leimer al een voorsprong van twee seconden op de concurrentie. Er kwam geen enkel moment in de race dat de koppositie van Leimer in gevaar kwam. Luiz Razia maakte twee ronden eerder zijn pitstop, waarna Leimer zijn voorsprong alleen maar uitbouwde. Uiteindelijk was hij Razia 6,9 seconden te snel af.

Jolyon Palmer, die weining indruk maakte in zijn eerste GP2-seizoen, reed een sterke race in Abu Dhabi. Gestart vanaf de vijfde plaats pakte hij zijn eerste podiumplaats met de derde stek. Hij wist Marcus Ericsson in de slotfase nog van zich af te houden. Wel eindigde Palmer al 28,7 seconden achter winnaar Leimer.

Kevin Ceccon eindigde als vijfde, gevolgd door Tom Dillmann die de beste rookie was. Antonio Felix da Coste pakte de zevende stek, terwijl James Calado met de achtste positie de pole voor de tweede race in handen heeft. Nigel Melker reed een kleurloze race. De Nederlander, die vanaf de dertiende plaats was gestart, kwam niet verder dan de vijftiende stek in de race.
