Esteban Gutierrez crasht, maar pakt wel pole position

Esteban Gutierrez heeft op een bijzondere manier de pole position voor de eerste GP3-race van het weekend veroverd. De leider in het kampioenschap reed de snelste tijd in de kwalificatie, crashte daarna, maar had wel de pole in handen.

Robert Wickens stond lange tijd bovenaan de tijdenlijst, maar met nog acht minuten op de klok pakte Gutierrez de snelste tijd over van de Canadees. Het leek erop dat de leider in het kampioenschap nog sneller kon, maar in zijn volgende ronde raakte hij de muur bij Turn 5, waarmee Gutierrez de achterkant van zijn bolide beschadigde.

De ART-auto van Gutierrez moest door de marshalls van de baan worden verwijderd, waardoor de organisatie besloot de rode vlag uit te hangen. Hierdoor kon niemand meer zijn tijd verbeteren en had Gutierrez zich verzekerd van zijn allereerste pole van het seizoen. Ondertussen was Roberto Merhi nog dichtbij gekomen, maar hij kwam uiteindelijk 0.056 seconden tekort op de tijd van Gutierrez.

Robert Wickens was teruggeduwd naar de derde positie, gevolgd door Michael Christensen, Jean-Eric Vergne en Felipe Guimaraes. Nigel Melker was de snelste Nederlander op de zevende startplaats, terwijl Renger van der Zande een teleurstellende sessie kende. De teamgenoot van Melker reed slechts naar de 23e startplaats.
