Nyck de Vries pakt overtuigend pole voor eerste race op Hungaroring

Nyck de Vries heeft zich op het allerlaatste moment naar de pole position voor de eerste wedstrijd van de GP3 op de Hungaroring gekwalificeerd. De ART-coureur deed dat op overtuigende wijze en was sneller dan Matt Parry en Antonio Fuoco.

Het verhaal van de GP3-kwalificatie waren de track limits. De GP3-rijders lieten goed zien wat er tijdens de Formule 1-kwalificatie ook kan gebeuren, want meerdere coureurs zagen hun tijd verwijderd worden omdat ze van de baan gingen in bocht 4 of 11.

Bij het vallen van de vlag zette De Vries een 1:32.979 neer. Daarmee was de Nederlander bijna een halve seconde sneller dan Matt Parry en Antonio Fuoco, die elkaar op 0.014 seconden volgden. De teamgenoten van De Vries kwalificeerden zich op de vijfde (Fukuzumi), zesde (Leclerc) en achtste (Albon) plaats. Stijn Schothorst kende een teleurstellende kwalificatie, spinde van de baan en start vanmiddag als laatste.

Heel knap van de Vries. Nooit te snel afschrijven deze coureur. Hij heeft iets langer nodig dan coureurs als Leclerc, maar de potentie is er wel.
