Charles Leclerc klaar voor volgende stap

Charles Leclerc kroonde zich dit weekend in Abu Dhabi tot nieuwe GP3-kampioen. De koppositie van de jonge Monegask kwam op Yas Marina Circuit niet meer in gevaar. Concurrent Alexander Albon vergooide zijn laatste kansen op de titel in de hoofdrace door een uitvalbeurt. De Thai ging in ronde 11 te hard over de kerbs, vloog even door de lucht en kwam in aanraking met Jack Aitken.

Dat maakte een einde aan zijn droom om het kampioenschap nog voor de neus van Leclerc weg te kapen. Leclerc, onderdeel van het opleidingstraject van Ferrari, begon het seizoen als grote favoriet en die status maakte hij meer dan waar. Hij sloot het seizoen af met 202 punten, 25 punten meer dan Albon. Toch won de Thai dit jaar één race meer dan Leclerc.

Het is dan ook nog even afwachten hoe Leclerc zich op een hoger niveau staande houdt. Hij triomfeerde dit seizoen drie keer en stond in totaal acht keer op het podium in de GP3. Daarmee verdiende hij een contract bij Prema Racing in de GP2 voor 2017. Leclerc zal volgend jaar moeten bewijzen dat hij echt klaar is voor een stap hogerop.

De twee Nederlanders in het GP3-veld sloten het seizoen op positieve wijze af. Nyck de Vries schreef de hoofdrace op zaterdag op zijn naam en legde met 133 punten beslag op de zesde plaats in de eindstand. Steijn Schothorst scoorde in beide races in Abu Dhabi punten op weg naar een dertiende plek in het kampioenschap met 36 punten.

  Nog een jaar GP3 met ART en voor de titel (hij heeft genoeg punten voor licentie) of idd de stap naar de GP2.
