De GP3 heeft bij de voorbereidingen op het nieuwe seizoen een beroep gedaan op kampioen Charles Leclerc. DRS maakt in 2017 voor het eerst zijn opwachting in de opstapklasse en ook de nieuwe banden moesten aan de tand gevoeld worden. Leclerc testte in totaal zes dagen, eerlijk verdeeld over Abu Dhabi en Bahrein.

De jonge Monegask legde in totaal meer dan 2.600 kilometer af. Leclerc: "Het programma was erg prettig. We hebben veel gereden. Het was druk, ik heb bijvoorbeeld op één dag 120 ronden gereden op Yas Marina Circuit. Het was een verrassing voor mij dat ik zoveel moest rijden. Fysiek gezien was het zwaar, maar ik ben tevreden over het werk van het ontwikkelingsteam."

"Een van de doelen voor de tests was om te kijken of DRS wel een groot genoeg verschil zou veroorzaken om voor mooie gevechten in de remzones te zorgen. De eerste optie die we uitprobeerden maakte weinig verschil, maar de tweede optie was een voltreffer. Dat merkten we zowel in Abu Dhabi als in Bahrein."

"Ik ga ervan uit dat DRS veel meer inhaalmogelijkheden zal creëren en de races een stuk interessanter maakt. Ik heb ook met veel verschillende compounds getest in Bahrein. Pirelli wilde wat ontwikkelingswerk uitvoeren met het oog op de toekomst. Het was een nuttige ervaring voor mij om te zien hoe Pirelli te werk gaat en ik vond de zes testdagen uiterst waardevol."
