Debuterende Mazepin pakt zege in hoofdrace Barcelona

ART-coureur Nikita Mazepin heeft de eerste zege van het nieuwe GP3-seizoen gepakt. De Rus startte de race als tweede en profiteerde van een matige start van polesitter Leonardo Pulcini. Het feest voor ART Grand Prix was compleet: Anthoine Hubert en Callum Ilott pakten de resterende podiumplaatsen voor het Franse team.

Bij de start was Pulcini matig weg en daar profiteerde Mazepin van. De testcoureur van Force India slaat meteen een gaatje met de rest van het veld, terwijl Niko Kari blijft staan op de grid. Pulcini valt terug naar de vierde plaats en moet in de vijfde ronde ook Boccolacci laten gaan.

Achter Mazepin vechten Hubert en Ilott om de tweede plaats. In het middenveld vinden ook een aantal leuke gevechten plaats. David Beckmann en Giuliano Alesi gaan zij aan zij over het rechte stuk en raken elkaar zelfs even met de wielen. In de twaalfde ronde pakt Ilott de tweede plaats over van teamgenoot Anthoine Hubert, maar de Brit komt niet echt weg bij zijn teamgenoot.

Vooraan heeft Mazepin inmiddels een gat van meer dan twee seconden terwijl Hubert opnieuw aan begint te dringen bij Ilott. Twee ronden voor het einde pakt Hubert de tweede plaats terug. Mazepin komt uiteindelijk met een voorsprong van bijna vier seconden als winnaar over de streep met achter zicht Hubert en Ilott. Pulcini pakt de vierde plaats uiteindelijk nog terug, maar de Italiaan had ongetwijfeld op meer gehoopt.

De GP3-sprintrace begint morgen om 10:25 uur.
