Langzaam maar zeker komt er wat vaart in het herstel van Robert Wickens. De Canadees heeft nu een video op zijn Instagram-pagina geplaatst waarop hij met hulp van een fysiotherapeut en krukken een stukje loopt.

Wickens raakte in augustus zwaargewond bij een crash tijdens de IndyCar-race op Pocono Raceway. Hij werd gelanceerd over het achterwiel van Ryan Hunter-Reay en vloog daarna de hekken in. Daarbij liep Wickens schade op aan zijn ruggengraat, die bij hem leidde tot verlamming in zijn onderlichaam.

Inmiddels lijkt de weg richting herstel ingeslagen. Wickens postte eerder al een video waarin hij met hulp van meerdere fysio's en een speciaal apparaat zijn eerste stapjes zette en ook liet hij zien hoe hij zichzelf van een bed naar een rolstoel kon overbrengen. Op de video van vrijdag loopt Wickens alweer iets zelfstandiger. Hij heeft het apparaat links laten liggen en gebruikt nu krukken om op te steunen. Wel assisteert er een fysiotherapeut bij het bewegen van zijn benen.
