Robert Wickens aanwezig bij presentatie van Arrow Sam Schmidt Motorsport

San Schmidt Motorsport zorgde in het Pepsi-Center, voor een grote verrasing tijdens de presentatie van hun nieuw titelsponsor: Arrow Electronics. De vorig jaar zwaar verongelukte Robert Wickens was namelijk de speciale gast tijdens de teampresentatie.

De relatie tussen nieuwe titelsponsor Arrow en SPM begon in 2013. Arrow is mede betrokken bij het 'SAM Project", een project waarbij een Corvette werd omgetoverd tot een auto die door teameigenaar Sam Schmidt, die na een ernstig ongeluk gehandicapt is, bestuurd kan worden. Schmidt kan deze auto besturen zonder zijn handen of voeten te gebruiken. "Met deze aankondiging komt er voor mij een droom uit," vertelde Schmidt bij de presentatie. "Mike Long en het hele team van Arrow hebben een systeem ontwikkeld zodat ik na zestien jaar weer auto kan rijden. Het heeft niet alleen mijn leven, maar ook het leven van miljoenen mensen veranderd. Nu ze titelsponsor zijn geworden van mijn team kunnen we beiden werken aan onze droom om de Indy 500 en het kampioenschap te winnen."

De Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorpsort-auto's zullen beiden door Honda-motoren aangedreven worden en exact dezelfde livery hebben. Dit doet mensen denken aan de Penske jaren met Marlboro, de Ganassi jaren met Target en de Newman-Haas jaren met Texaco en Dirt Devil. Marcus Ericsson zal de nummer 7 auto besturen, terwijl James Hinchcliffe zijn vertrouwde nummer 5 zal houden. Arrow SPM heeft de nummer 6 auto nog steeds gereserveerd staan voor Robert Wickens. De Canadees mag altijd terug komen als hij klaar is om in de auto te stappen.

Mooi om te zien en hem gezien te hebben gedurende zijn carriere maar zie hem eerlijk gezegd nog niet terugkeren op het hoogste plan, zonde.
