Wickens keert in St. Petersburg terug in IndyCar-paddock

Bijna acht maanden na zijn angstaanjagende ongeluk keert Robert Wickens komend weekend terug in de paddock van de IndyCar Series. De Canadees zal als toeschouwer aanwezig zijn bij de eerste race van het nieuwe seizoen.

Wickens debuteerde in 2018 in de IndyCar Series met een sterk optreden op het stratencircuit van St. Petersburg, dat al jarenlang de openingsrace van het seizoen organiseert. De voormalig DTM-coureur startte de race op pole position en leek op weg naar de zege, totdat hij vlak voor het einde van de race in de rondte getikt werd door Alexander Rossi.

Ook in de rest van het seizoen maakte Wickens veel indruk, maar tijdens de race op Pocono Raceway ging het vreselijk mis. De Canadees kwam in aanraking met Ryan Hunter-Reay en vloog vervolgens de hekken rond de oval in. Daar hield hij onder andere een verlamming van het onderlichaam en meerdere botbreuken aan over.

Wickens lijkt echter niet op te geven en zet alles op alles om zoveel mogelijk te herstellen van zijn opgelopen verwondingen. De botbreuken zijn genezen en ook probeert hij zoveel mogelijk beweging en kracht in zijn benen terug te winnen. Via zijn kanalen op sociale media probeert hij zijn fans op de hoogte te houden van hoe zijn herstel verloopt en beetje bij beetje lijkt er vooruitgang in te zitten voor de Canadees.

In november plaatste Wickens voor het eerst een video waarin hij met ondersteuning weer een aantal stappen kon zetten, terwijl eind januari een video volgde waarin hij zelfstandig op een hometrainer fietste. Op Twitter en Instagram kondigde Wickens dinsdagavond aan dat hij in St. Petersburg weer van de partij is bij de start van het IndyCar-seizoen. Dat liet hij weten in een begeleidende tekst bij een video, waarin hij op eigen kracht een aantal stappen achter een looprek weet te zetten.
