Alex Palou krijgt kans in IndyCar Series bij Dale Coyne Racing

Alex Palou gaat in 2020 een nieuw avontuur tegemoet. De Spaanse coureur zal de Japanse Super Formula na een sterk seizoen verruilen voor een avontuur in de IndyCar Series bij Dale Coyne Racing.

Na twee seizoenen in de GP3, een jaar in de Japanse Formule 3 en een jaar Europese Formule 3 maakte Palou begin 2019 wederom de overstap naar Japan, waar hij een dubbel programma afwerkte. Hij reed namens TCS Nakajima Racing in de Super Formula, waar hij een race won en uiteindelijk op P3 eindigde in het kampioenschap, terwijl hij met Team Goh uitkwam in de Super GT300.

Ook kreeg Palou eerder in 2019 de kans om een IndyCar-bolide te testen namens Dale Coyne Racing en daarbij maakte hij een sterke indruk. Het team heeft nu besloten om de 22-jarige Spanjaard voor een volledig seizoen naar de Verenigde Staten te halen. Palou zal alle 17 races van het seizoen rijden en het team zal door het leven gaan als Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh.

"Ik kijk er heel erg naar uit om naar Amerika te komen en in de IndyCars te racen", vertelde Palou. "Ik ben iedereen dankbaar die mij geholpen heeft op dit punt in mijn carrière te komen, en in het bijzonder Dale Coyne en Mr. Kazumichi Goh dat ze mij deze kans gegeven hebben."

Goh en Coyne hebben vertrouwen in talent Palou

Team Goh is een grote naam in de internationale autosport. Het team won in 1996 het Japanse GT-kampioenschap en in 2004 won het team als privateer de 24 uur van Le Mans met Seiji Ara, Tom Kristensen en Rinaldo Capello. "Alex laat veelbelovende dingen zien. We zijn allemaal blij dat we onze relatie met Alex kunnen voortzetten en hem verder te zien groeien richting een carrière in de IndyCar Series", verklaarde teameigenaar Goh.

"Het stemt ons tevreden om samen te werken met Kazumichi Goh, die al jaren een vriend is, in deze samenwerking voor 2020. We hebben Alex eerder dit jaar getest op Mid-Ohio en hij heeft op iedereen indruk gemaakt", verklaart Dale Coyne. "Hij groeiende prestaties in de afgelopen drie jaar beloven veel goeds voor de toekomst."

Palou is tot dusver de derde nieuwkomer die aangekondigd is voor de IndyCar Series in 2020. Vorige maand maakte McLaren bekend dat Oliver Askew namens het team zal debuteren, terwijl Indy Lights-concurrent Rinus van Kalmthout een heel seizoen de kans krijgt om indruk te maken bij Ed Carpenter Racing, het team waarbij regerend kampioen Josef Newgarden enkele jaren geleden definitief doorbrak.
