Palou wint ruimschoots op IMS en neemt heft in handen in tussenstand

Op Alex Palou stond geen maat tijdens de GMR Grand Prix op de binnenbaan van de befaamde Indianapolis Motor Speedway. De kampioen van 2021 nam vanaf ronde één het heft in handen en gaf iedereen het nakijken.

De Chip Ganassi-coureur finishte met maar liefst zeventien secondes voorsprong voor McLaren-rijder Pato O'Ward, die voor de derde keer tweede werd in 2023. Teamgenoot Alexander Rossi pakte zijn eerste podium in dienst van het team uit Woking. Rinus VeeKay startte als zeventiende, maar kwam in de wedstrijd niet verder dan een dertiende plek.

Alex Palou was dolgelukkig met zijn eerste zege van 2023. "We wisten echt dat we een snelle auto hadden sinds VT1", zei de trotse winnaar. "De auto is het hele weekend fantastisch geweest. Toen we eenmaal wisten dat we op rood begonnen, denk ik dat we wisten dat we gingen vechten voor de overwinning."

Naast de zege op de Brickyard, pakt Palou ook de leiding over van Marcus Ericsson, die uiteindelijk achtste werd in de race.

De GMR Grand Prix is de opmaat richting de Indianapolis 500, een van de belangrijkste en grootste autoraces in dit universum. In 2022 won Ericsson deze prestigieuze race.

Op 28 mei vindt de 107de editie plaats op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In totaal zijn er 34 inschrijvingen met 33 gridposities beschikbaar. Een extra shoot-out kwalificatie, ook wel Bump Day, genoemd zal uiteindelijk bepalen wie de laatste startplekken opvult. De legendarische Roger Penske zal de vier beroemde woorden 'Drivers, Start Your Engines' door de speakers gallen als startcommando.

Rinus. Ooit een talent die weleens de nieuwe Max in de VS kon worden. Vanaf dat moment ging zijn ontwikkeling hard. Heel hard. Achteruit om precies te zijn. Inmiddels is Rooie Rinus de Vries van het woonwagenkamp in Amersfoort sneller in zijn Mercedes E350 dan Rinus Veekay in zijn Indycar. Het kan verkeren.

  Rinus blijft te lang plakken bij ECR. Hij had vorig jaar een overstap moeten maken naar een groter team. Betere begeleiding, betere auto.
  
  Je merkt dat ECR gewoonweg niet snel genoeg is op de meeste races. Enige uitzondering daarop zijn de ovals. Ik verwacht dat Rinus bij de Indy 500 weer verder vooraan staat.
  
  Verslaat zijn (echt geen hoogvliegende) teammate. Verslaat Ed Carpenter als deze meedoet op de ovals. Veel meer kunnen we niet vragen, maar veel meer lijkt Rinus momenteel ook niet te bieden hebben. Ben het met je eens dat het beter moet.

  Hoeveel races volg je @Rimmer... want je probeert met je 2de commment toch Indycar weer als aanfluiting neer te zetten.
  Rinus de nieuwe Max? Tuurlijk niet. Zelfs prins Leclerc staat daar op dit moment ver van verwijderd... en daar staat Rinus ver van verwijderd...
  
  Maar het niveau Indycar is een klap hoger dan het huidige F2 seizoen. Zelfde kan je ook zeggen over WEC, maar het niveau daar staat niet ter discussie (in jouw termen "een kampioenschap waarin Buemi en Hartley domineren"
  
  F1 is de top. maar Indycar staat zeker met WEC en Superfomula een klap hoger dan die zogenaamde supertalenten in F2... elke runner-up F2 van de afgelopen jaren heeft nog steeds geen race gewonnen in Indycar (zelfde geld ook voor Grosjean) dus zo makkelijk is het niet.

  @rimmer deels eens deels niet. Zeker niet het toptalent. Had meer van hem verwacht. Maar zoals anderen ook al aangeven hij moet weg bij ecr. Gister reed rinus een prima race. Niks op aan te merken
  Hij verslaat alle anderen in dat team dus tja meer kan hij niet doen lijkt mij. Maar nogmaals eens, had meer verwacht, en hij maakt teveel fouten

De Zweedse IndyCar-rijder kwam dit keer niet verder dan de achtste plaats maar feliciteerde wel winnaar lex Palou.

  Ik vond het wel een vermakelijke race. Verschillende strategieen bij de top 3. Wel een heel europees achtige race, maar de commentator gaf al aan dat de IMS GP qua baan ook meer weg heeft van een europees circuit en dat daardoor europeanen juist hier makkelijker op tempo komen. Laatste stint van Palou was wel heel sterk.
