Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout raasde tussen de favorieten van McLaren en Chip Ganassi als een komeet over de Brickyard, maar kwam tijdens de Fast Six net tekort voor pole voor de Indianapolis 500.

Die eer ging naar Alex Palou en start dus volgende week vooraan. De leider in de stand deed dat met een polerecord met maar liefst 234.217 miles per uur gemiddeld over vier rondes (376.9 km/u). VeeKay kwam 0.006 tekort over een run van 16 kilometer.

Felix Rosenqvist maakte de eerste startrij compleet. Daarachter Santino Ferrucci, Pato O'Ward en de polesitter van 2021 en 2022 Scott Dixon op de tweede startrij.

Fast Twelve

De beste twaalf van de eerste kwalificatie bestond uit een rits oud-kampioenen van de Indianapolis 500, maar de ongekroonden namen het heft in handen in deze sessie.

De winnaar van 2022, Marcus Ericsson, moest een van de eerste de oval op van circa 4 kilometer, maar zijn snelheidsgemiddelde van 232.671 was op voorhand niet snel genoeg voor een plaatsje bij de beste zes en het laatste segment waar gestreden wordt om polepostion.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout kwam op het einde van de sessie aan de beurt dankzij zijn vierde positie in de eerste kwalificatie. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur klokte een pijlsnelle 'tijd' met 2.33.801 gemiddeld en reed daarmee een derde tijd achter Amerikaans hoop Santino Ferrucci en de ongenaakbare Felix Rosenqvist die als enige de 234 mijl passeerde. Achter de Nederlander stonden kampioenschapsleider Alex Palou en polesitter van 2021 en 2022 Scott Dixon en McLaren-coureur Pato 'O Ward.

Door de plaatsing van VeeKay in de Fast Six was de Nederlander direct verzekerd van de tweede startrij.

Bump Day

33 startplaatsen, 34 auto's. Een extra shoot-out moest van pas komen. De nummers 31 t/m 34 van de eerste kwalificatie op de zaterdag kwamen in actie in het gevecht om de laatste drie startplekken.

Christian Lundgaard, Graham Rahal en Jack Harvey, alledrie uitkomend voor Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, en Sting Ray Robb moesten vrezen voor een vrije zondag volgende week.

De vier rijders hadden een uur de tijd om dat te voorkomen. Uiteindelijk was Rahal de pineut en de Amerikaan mag de Indianapolis 500 via de zijlijn aanschouwen.

Het is geen pole record, dat staat nog altijd op naam van Arie Luyendijk: 236.986 mph / 381.392 kmh... Het was geloof ik wel de snelste kwalificatie gemiddeld.

  Arie heeft wel de snelste kwali als record maar niet de snelste pole. Door pech en rare regels destijds kon hij in 1996 niet meestrijden om de pole. Die ging naar Scott Brayton die helaas daar niet van kon genieten: tijdens trainingen vooraf verongelukte hij door door een klapband op volle snelheid.

Mooi prestatie van VeeKay... hopelijk nu meer geluk in de race. Opvallend dat Graham Rahal, vorig jaar nog potentieel F1 coureur, het niet is gelukt om zich te kwalificeren.
