Ed Carpenter schrijft Firestone 600 op zijn naam

Ed Carpenter heeft de Firestone 600 op de Texas Motor Speedway gewonnen. De Amerikaan was in een fel gevecht verwikkeld met Will Power, maar Power reed bij een van zijn laatste pitstops te hard door de pits en ontving daarvoor een straf. Dat was precies de ruimte die Carpenter nodig had om te zegevieren.

Power stormde in de slotfase op verse banden nog wel naar de tweede plek, voor Juan Pablo Montoya die voor het eerst sinds zijn rentree in de IndyCar op het podium eindigde. Voor Marco Andretti en Takuma Sato gingen de kansen op een mooi resultaat letterlijk in rook op, de vlammen sloegen achter uit hun wagens en ze moesten de strijd staken. Carlos Munoz beging nog een fout bij het binnen rijde van de pits. Hij spinde, maar kon wel zijn weg vervolgen. Sebastien Bourdais en Justin Wilson belandden samen in de muur.
