Rookies volop in de schijnwerpers in straten van Houston

De twee IndyCar-races in Houston hebben verrassende resultaten opgeleverd. In race 1 was het podium geheel Colombiaans. Rookie Carlos Huertas won voor het eerst, voor Juan Pablo Montoya en Carlos Munoz. In race 2 eindigden rookies Mikhail Aleshin en Jack Hawksworth op het podium.

De eerste race van het weekend werd onder natte omstandigheden verreden. Dat resulteerde in een spervuur aan incidenten en neutralisaties. Takuma Sato crashte samen met Aleshin en blesseerde zijn pols. Scott Dixon en Luca Filippi belandden in de muur. Kampioenschapleider Will Power spinde, maar kon zijn weg vervolgen. Graham Rahal duwde Tony Kanaan van de baan.

De tweede race viel ten prooi aan Simon Pagenaud, maar de meeste aandacht ging uit naar de andere twee mannen op het podium. Aleshin en Hawksworth mochten het ereschavot voor het eerst beklimmen namelijk. Hawksworth kwam bovendien vanaf de laatste startplaats. Huertas, die een dag eerder nog zegevierde, viel nu uit met een technisch probleem.
