Hunter-Reay grist zege onder neus van Kanaan vandaan

Tony Kanaan dacht in de Iowa Corn Indy 300 op de winst af te stevenen, maar een tactische meesterzet katapulteerde Ryan Hunter-Reay nog naar de zege. Kanaan leidde 247 van de 300 rondjes, maar Hunter-Reay ging als eerste over de finish met dank aan een late pitstop voor vers rubber. Josef Newgarden eindigde als tweede, voor Kanaan.

Hunter-Reay: "Man, dit was gekkenwerk, wat we met de banden gedaan hebben. Het was een gok en die heeft zich dubbel en dwars uitbetaald. Mijn banden waren al eerder op, dus die pitstop was wel noodzakelijk, maar hulde voor de teamleiding dat ze de juiste beslissingen hebben genomen. Dat is wel zo prettig. Het was leuk, aan het einde leek het wel een videogame."

Achter de Indy 500-winnaar gebeurde ook het nodige. Takuma Sato en Mikhail Aleshin schoven gezamenlijk van de baan. Juan Pablo Montoya crashte na een incident met Ed Carpenter. Carlos Huertas staakte de strijd omdat hij zich niet lekker voelde. De race lag even stil door een rode vlag vanwege wat miezerige regen.
