Will Power comfortabel op pole in St. Petersburg

Will Power heeft vanavond de pole position veroverd voor de tweede IndyCar-race van het seizoen. In de straten van St. Petersburg was Power tijdens alle trainingen al oppermachtig en ook tijdens de kwalificatie was de Penske-coureur onverslaanbaar.

Power kwam comfortabel door de eerste twee kwalificatiesessies heen naar de Fast Six. Zijn eerste rondje in die Fast Six was al genoeg voor de pole position, maar Power verbeterde zijn tijd met nog een tiende. Tony Kanaan kwam het dichtst in de buurt van Power's tijd, maar moest toch al ruim twee tienden toegeven. Hiermee staat er wel voor het eerst sinds de zomer van 2008 weer een auto van Andretti Autosport op de eerste startrij.

Scott Dixon, de kampioen uit 2008, reed een solide kwalificatie en was op de derde startpositie de snelste Ganassi-coureur. Justin Wilson kwam voor Dreyer & Reinbold Racing weer erg sterk over en pakte de vierde plaats, terwijl Helio Castroneves en Marco Andretti de top zes completeren.

Ryan Hunter-Reay kende een goede kwalificatie en zal de race morgen als zevende beginnen, voor de nog altijd sterk rijdende Alex Tagliani. Oud-Formule 1-coureur Takuma Sato reed in zijn tweede weekend naar de elfde plaats, terwijl Simona de Silvestro de snelste vrouw was op de veertiende stek. Danica Patrick eindigde als 21e.
