47-jarige John Andretti naar Andretti Autosport voor Indy 500

John Andretti zal tijdens de komende editie van de Indianapolis 500 opnieuw zijn opwachting maken in de race. De 47-jarige neef van Michael Andretti zal voor Andretti Autosport een vijfde bolide besturen naast Tony Kanaan, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Danica Patrick en Marco Andretti.

Andretti heeft al vaker meegereden in de Indy 500 zoals in de jaren '80 en '90. Daarin finishte hij vier maal in de top tien tijdens de prestigieuze race inclusief een vijfde plaats in 1991. Ook de afgelopen drie jaar reed John Andretti de Indy 500 met Panther, Roth en Dreyer & Reinbold.

Dit jaar staat Andretti dus voor het eerst aan de start van de race met het team van zijn neef. "Ik kan me geen situatie bedenken dat beter is dan de situatie op dit moment", vertelde de 47-jarige Andretti. "De relatie die ik heb met Richard (Petty, degene die deze samenwerking mede mogelijk maakt, red.), het respect dat ik heb voor Michael, dit is echt een prefecte situatie. Ik kan niet wachten om in de auto te stappen. Voor mij kan de maand mei niet snel genoeg komen."
