Ryan Hunter-Reay geeft Andretti eerste overwinning sinds 2008

Ryan Hunter-Reay heeft zojuist op het circuit in Long Beach zijn tweede IndyCar-race gewonnen. De Amerikaan, die momenteel alleen een part-time contract heeft, schenkt Andretti Autosport hun eerste overwinning sinds juni 2008.

Will Power kwam als beste weg bij de start van de race, gevolgd door Hunter-Reay en Justin Wilson. Power reed redelijk comfortabel vooraan toen in de zeventiende ronde zijn versnellingsbak kuren begon te krijgen. Even bleef de bak vastzitten in de eerste versnelling, waardoor zowel Hunter-Reay als Wilson hem voorbij staken.

Power wilde proberen om het leidende duo bij de eerste pitstops te passeren, maar hij kwam er niet in de buurt. Iets verder naar voren had Hunter-Reay ook een gat geslagen naar Wilson, die echter enkele ronden later weer dichterbij kwam toen de Amerikaan vast zat achter Alex Lloyd na zijn stop.

Het duurde vijf ronden voordat Hunter-Reay voorbij kwam aan Lloyd, maar daar kon Wilson niet van profiteren. Op het moment dat Wilson Lloyd wilde inhalen, sneed Lloyd naar binnen en zo braken er enkele onderdelen van Wilson's voorvleugel af. Wilson kon meteen zijn laatste stop maken, maar vanwege het wisselen van de voorvleugel kwam Will Power weer voorbij aan hem.

Een gele vlag bracht het veld vlak voor de finish nog dichtbij elkaar. Wilson profiteerde en pakte de tweede plaats terug van Power. Hunter-Reay bleef echter buiten bereik en reed 5,6 seconden eerder over de finish dan Wilson. Hiermee scoort Andretti Autosport haar eerste overwinning sinds juni 2008 en is het de eerste overwinning voor Hunter-Reay in anderhalf jaar tijd.

Power maakte op ruim acht seconden van Hunter-Reay het podium compleet. Scott Dixon passeerde Tony Kanaan nog in de pits en pakte zo de vierde positie, voor Kanaan. Mario Moraes eindigde als zesde, gevolgd door Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Dn Wheldon en Mike Conway op de tiende plaats. Takuma Sato eindigde de race teleurstellend op de achttiende plaats, terwijl Bertrand Baguette de finish niet haalde.
