Afgelopen week was een zwarte week voor het Indycar-kampioenschap met het overlijden van een van de lievelingscoureurs in het kampioenschap, Justin Wilson. Ondanks dat alle rijders en betrokkenen Wilson in hun gedachten hebben, moet er dit weekend 'gewoon' weer geracet worden. De laatste race van het seizoen vindt plaats op de Sonoma Raceway. Will Power opende het weekend als snelste.

Power maakt nog steeds een kans op het kampioenschap, al is zijn achterstand ten opzichte van de leider in het kampieonschap (Juan Pablo Montoya) behoorlijk groot. Power reed een 1:17:4858 en was daarmee sneller dan de naaste belager van Montoya, Graham Rahal. De winnaar van de vorige race, Ryan Hunter-Reay reed de derde tijd, gevolgd door Scott Dixon en Marco Andretti. Juan Pablo Montoya kwam niet verder dan een negende tijd.

Er starten 25 wagens in de seizoensafsluiter, waaronder twee oude bekenden. De Rus Mikhail Aleshin keert na bijna een jaar terug in het kampioenschap en reed de zeventiende tijd. Oriol Servia bestuurt dit weekend de auto van Justin Wilson. Andretti Autosport besloot deze week om de auto van Wilson toch in te schrijven, omdat Wilson het zo gewild zou hebben. Servia had wel de enige rode vlag van de sessie op zijn naam. De Spanjaard stopte op de baan, maar de sessie kon vrij snel hervat worden.

De kwalificatie wordt vannacht om 00:05 verreden.
