Honderden gasten bewijzen Justin Wilson laatste eer

Ruim 500 genodigden hebben gisteren afscheid genomen van Justin Wilson. De dienst vond plaats in Paulerspury, een plaats niet ver van het circuit van Silverstone. Wilson overleed vorige maand nadat hij ernstig gewond was geraakt aan zijn hoofd bij een crash op de Pocono Raceway.

Naast familie, vrienden en vele collega's uit de IndyCar, waren er ook veel fans aanwezig bij de plechtigheid om Wilson de laatste eer te bewijzen. Na de plechtigheid werd er een wake gehouden op het circuit van Silversone waar de vlaggen van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, de Verenigde Staten en de Britse coureursclub BRDC halfstok werden gehesen.

De kist van Wilson was bedekt met de Britse vlag met daarop de helm van Wilson zoals deze werd gedragen door de Brit in zijn tijd in de Formule 1 bij Minardi. De kist werd gedragen door onder andere Mark Webber, voormalig teamgenoot van Wilson bij Jaguar, Dario Franchitti en de broer van Wilson.

De ceremonie werd geleid door Sir Jackie Stewart en voormalig Formule 1-coureur Jonathan Palmer. Palmer bracht Wilson in de Formule 1 en heeft ook een bijdrage geleverd aan de vele successen van Wilson in de Verenigde Staten. Stewart haalde de ceremonie nogmaals aan dat Wilson om het leven was gekomen bij het uitoefenen van zijn grootste passie.

Op 14 september start er een veiling ter nagedachtenis aan Wilson. Bij deze veiling worden o.a. de helmen van alle IndyCar-coureur geveild. De veiling is opgezet voor de twee jonge dochters van Wilson.
