Ryan Briscoe verslaat Danica Patrick voor winst in Texas

Ryan Briscoe heeft afgelopen nacht de IndyCar-race op de Texas Speedway gewonnen. De Penske-coureur was op de finish 1,4 seconden sneller dan Danica Patrick. Teamgenoot Marco Andretti volgde op de derde positie.

Briscoe behield de leiding in de eerste stint, maar werd wel onder druk gehouden door Dario Franchitti. Even later werd Franchitti gepasseerd door Will Power, maar hij kon het tempo van Briscoe niet volgen. Na de eerste pitstops, die plaatsvonden onder een Yellow vanwege rotzooi op de baan, pakte Franchitti echter de leiding. Briscoe verloor veel tijd en viel terug tot de vijfde plaats.

Doordat Briscoe terug was gevallen, werd Will Power de voornaamste uitdager van leider Franchitti. In de 97e ronde van de race maakte Simona de Silvestro echter een angstaanjagende klapper mee. De vrouwelijke HVM-coureur crashte tegen de muur en daarna vatte haar bolide vlam. Het duurde even, maar De Silvestro kon redelijk ongedeerd uit haar auto stappen.

Power reed echter door de brokstukken van de crash heen en moest hierdoor een extra pitstop maken. Hierna reed Briscoe weer terug op de tweede positie, achter Franchitti. In ronde 129 werd hun gevecht voor de leiding onderbroken door een crash tussen Mario Moraes en Helio Castroneves. Moraes reed Castroneves de muur in, waarbij ook Bertrand Baguette betrokken werd. De Belg kon geen kant meer op en was de zevende uitvaller van de race.

Hierna hanteerden de coureurs verschillende strategieën, waardoor onder andere Danica Patrick, Alex Tagliani en Will Power even aan de leiding reden. Uiteindelijk was het alsnog Ryan Briscoe die, ondanks een moeizaam begin van de race, de overwinning voor zich opeistte. Danica Patrick boekte haar beste resultaat van het seizoen door als tweede over de finish te komen. Power reed hierna nog even als derde rond, maar kwam net wat brandstof tekort en moest een extra stop inlassen.

Hierdoor konden Scott Dixon en Marco Andretti strijden om de laatste podiumplaats, een strijd die gewonnen werd door Andretti. Dixon eindigde dus als vierde, gevolgd door Dario Franchitti en de Andretti-bolides van Tony Kanaan en Ryan Hunter-Reay.
