Dixon vindt dat 'aero-kits' races minder spannend hebben gemaakt

Viervoudig IndyCar-kampioen Scott Dixon noemt de introductie van 'aero-kits' in het seizoen 2015 onnodig. Volgens de Nieuw-Zeelander hebben de aerodynamische onderdelen eraan bijgedragen dat de races minder spannend zijn geworden. De onderdelen werden toegelaten tot het reglement om het verschil aan te geven tussen auto's aangedreven door Chevrolet en auto's aangedreven door Honda. In 2016 zullen verbeterde versies van de pakketten worden geïntroduceerd.

"Naar mijn mening zijn deze tools niet nodig. Het heeft sommige races er niet spannender op gemaakt. Dichter achter iemand rijden was vorig jaar niet mogelijk op sommige normale circuits. De IndyCar is een fantastische sport en voor de introductie van de de aero-kit pakketten waren de races echt fantastisch. De races zijn nog steeds mooi, maar toch iets minder dan een paar jaar geleden", aldus Dixon.

Honda krijgt deze winter compensatie om het aerodynamisch pakket verder te ontwikkelen. Het verschil met concurrent Chevrolet was afgelopen seizoen vrij groot. Chevrolet is daar niet blij mee, maar Dixon beseft zich ook dat het voor de organisatie een middel is om Honda in de sport te houden. Dixon: "Ik ken de details niet van hun gedachten, maar ik denk dat de compensatie die ze hebben gekregen uiteindelijk meetelt in de onderhandelingen van Honda om in de sport te blijven. Ik denk dat de organisatie er alles aan gedaan heeft om de verschillen zo klein mogelijk te houden. Wanneer Honda echter een enorm voordeel krijgt aankomend seizoen wordt de organisatie daar ook niet blij van."

Volgens Dixon was de compensatie voor Honda niet nodig, omdat de verschillen tussen Chevrolet en Honda gedurende het seizoen steeds kleiner werden: "Honda werd steeds sterker naarmate het seizoen vorderde. In het midden van het jaar waren ze minimaal gelijkwaardig aan Chevrolet. Het is niet voor niets dat vier van de laatste zes races door Honda zijn gewonnen. Nu krijgen ze ook nog de mogelijkheid hun pakket verder te optimaliseren. Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe dat gaat uitpakken."

Dixon heeft gelijk. Niet alleen minder spannend, ook meteen meer irritant door de vele extra wings en aero-dynamische delen die fragile zijn. Een kleine aanrijding is tegenwoordig meteen een pace-car situatie doordat de baan meteen bezaaid is met kleine brokstukken.
Deze aero-kits voor high speed ovals (Texas, Indianapolis en Fontana) zijn levensgevaarlijk. Zeker die van Chevy die er afgelopen jaar de Indy 500 redelijk mee in de war hebben gestuurd tijdens de trainingen en pole-day.
Met een eerlijke kwalificatie op Indy was Dixon overigens veel ruimer kampioen geworden dan Montoya. Indianapolis heeft Dixon 42 punten gekost in het kampioenschap terwijl het Montoya maar 16 punten heeft gekost. Tel die aan het einde van het jaar er bij op en het mag duidelijk zijn dat Dixon de terechte kampioen was.
