Power andermaal op pole in St. Petersburg

Het stratencircuit van St.Petersburg lijkt gemaakt te zijn voor Penske-coureur Will Power. De Australiër behaalde voor de zesde keer in zeven jaar tijd de pole position. Penske was dominant in de kwalificatie: de vier auto's van de renstal van Roger Penske staan op de eerste vier startplekken. Voor rivaal Ganassi verliep de kwalificatie teleurstellend. Drie van de vier coureurs van Ganassi starten buiten de top tien.

Power heeft Simon Pagenaud naast zich op de startopstelling, terwijl Helio Castroneves en Juan-Pablo Montoya de tweede startrij vormen. Scott Dixon wist de eer voor Ganassi nog enigzins te redden met een vijfde tijd. Andretti Autosport had gehoopt wat meer naar voren te staan, maar dat bleek niet haalbaar. Alleen Ryan Hunter-Reay wist zich in de top tien te kwalificeren.

Voormalig Formule-1 coureurs Alexander Rossi en Max Chilton wisten nog niet te imponeren. Chilton bungelde in de trainingen vaak achteraan, maar wist zich in de kwalificatie op te werken naar een zeventiende plaats. Alexander Rossi kwam niet verder dan de negentiende tijd. De race in St.Petersburg start vanavond om 18:45 uur. De race wordt live uitgezonden op Ziggo Sport totaal, de uitzending begint om 17:30 uur.

Achter het heersende viertal consolideerde regerend kampioen Scott Dixon met plek vijf. De Nieuw-Zeelander kwam achtduizendste van een seconde tekort om zich op de tweede startrij te kunnen nestelen. Ryan Hunter-Reay zorgde voor een pleister op de wonden van zijn Andretti-brigade: waar zijn drie teamgenoten niet binnen de top-twaalf wisten te geraken, redde de 35-jarige Amerikaan de eer met P6. Graham Rahal zal als zevende aanvangen, Sebastien Bourdais vertrekt vanaf P8.

De seizoensouverture van de IndyCar Series begint morgenavond (zondag, Nederlandse tijd) om 18:45 uur.

Hmm... slecht begin voor Andretti met deze coureurs....Hij zal nog wel even aankijken met deze jongens tot dat Frijns zn seizoen voorbij is!! Zal dan Frijns nog een kansje krijgen??
