Carpenter snelste in incidentrijke training

Ed Carpenter heeft de vrije training op het circuit van Phoenix als snelste afgesloten. De eigenaar van het Ed Carpenter Racing-team was iets sneller dan zijn werknemer Josef Newgarden. De training werd verstoord door zware crashes van Takuma Sato en James Hinchcliffe.

Sato en Hinchcliffe verloren beide de controle over hun bolides in de eerste bocht op de oval in Phoenix. De impacts waren niet mals en de sessie lag lange tijd stil, mede vanwege het opruimen van de rommel op de baan. Zowel Sato als Hinchcliffe stapten ongedeerd uit hun bolides, maar hun teams zullen veel werk hebben de auto's klaar te maken voor de rest van het weekend.

Tony Kanaan was lange tijd de snelste namens Ganassi, maar toen beide auto's van Carpenter op de baan kwamen was de pret over. De tijd van Newgarden is des te knapper omdat hij slechts een getimede run wist te rijden. De rest van de sessie stond Newgarden voornamelijk binnen vanwege gele vlaggen en technische problemen.

Voor Honda was het geen fijne sessie. Alleen Ryan Hunter-Reay wist met zijn door Honda aangedreven Andretti Autosport-bolide in de top tien te eindigen. De overige auto's met een Honda-motor moesten lijdzaam toezien hoe Chevrolet de dienst uitmaakte.

De race wordt komende nacht verreden onder kunstlicht. Het is de eerste keer sinds 2005 dat het IndyCar-circus de snelle oval in Phoenix aandoet.

Top! Dit heet klantenbinding. FIA kan nog heel wat leren van de yanks hoe je publiek moet vermaken. FIA komt niet verder dan een duf kwalificatiesyteem en in de race ieder contact door stewards te laten onderzoeken.
