Penske-duo Briscoe en Castroneves aan kop in eerste training

Ryan Briscoe heeft vanavond de snelste tijd laten noteren in de eerste vrije training voor de IndyCar-race op Watkins Glen. Teamgenoot Helio Castroneves eindigde als tweede, Scott Dixon reed de derde tijd.

Scott Dixon en Dario Franchitti van Ganassi leidden lang de sessie, terwijl de Penske-coureur een relatief laag tempo reden. Echter, in de laatste tien minuten werden door veel coureurs snellere tijden gereden en stonden onder andere Castroneves, Will Power en Justin Wilson aan kop.

Uiteindelijk was toch Ryan Briscoe de allersnelste. Met een 1:31.4142 was hij slechts 0.0831 seconden sneller dan teamgenoot Castroneves. Scott Dixon was de snelste Ganassi-coureur op de derde plaats, gevolgd door Dan Wheldon en Justin Wilson. De complete top-vijf reed binnen een halve tiende van de tijd van Briscoe.

Raphael Matos kende een sterke training met de achtste tijd, terwil Tony Kanaan de snelste Andretti-coureur was op de negende stek. Paul Tracy reed bij zijn comeback voor Dreyer & Reinbold de zestiende tijd, Takuma Sato de achttiende tijd en de Belg Bertrand Baguette kwam niet verder dan de 24e en voorlaatste tijd. Adam Carroll, voormalig A1GP-kampioen, maakt dit weekend zijn debuut bij Andretti Autosport en eindigde als 23e.
