Ryan Briscoe blijft aan kop in tweede training, stevige crash Viso

Ryan Briscoe heeft ook tijdens de tweede vrije training op Watkins Glen de snelste tijd gereden. Ditmaal bleef hij zijn andere teamgenoot, Will Power, voor. Scott Dixon gaf met zijn derde tijd al bijna drie tienden toe op Briscoe.

Het leek erop dat Penske de complete top-drie zou bezetten, maar een snelle ronde van Scott Dixon laat in de training voorkwam dat. Dixon ging in de laatste minuten voorbij aan Helio Castroneves, die nog wel sneller was dan Marco Andretti en Dario Franchitti.

Justin Wilson, de winnaar van vorig jaar op Watkins Glen, eindigde met de zevende tijd, gevolgd door Ryan Hunter-Reay en EJ Viso. Viso kende nog een harde crash, waarbij hij in de eerste bocht té veel over de kerbs reed en hard de muur inklapte. De stuurstangen vooraan de auto braken af, maar Viso kon gelukkig zonder verwondingen uitstappen. Teamgenoot Takuma Sato reed de tiende tijd, terwijl debutant Adam Carroll als achttiende eindigde. De Belg Bertrand Baguette reed de 24e en voorlaatste tijd.
