Penske domineert kwalificatie Watkins Glen, Power op pole position

Will Power zal de IndyCar-race op Watkins Glen morgen vanaf de pole position mogen vertrekken. De Penske-coureur was in de Fast Six sneller dan zijn teamgenoten Helio Castroneves en Ryan Briscoe.

Castroneves was de snelste coureur in de eerste kwalificatiegroep, terwijl Power in de top-twaalf kwalificatie vooraan eindigde. Ook Briscoe kwam gemakkelijk in de Fast Six terecht, waar Power al snel de koppositie pakte. Zijn 1:29.3164, die hij al vroeg in de sessie neerzette, bleek niet te verslaan.

Castroneves kwam 0.15 seconden tekort op de tijd van Power en spinde daarna in zijn laatste snelle rondje. Echter, de finishvlag werd al gezwaaid, dus was Power zeker van de pole position, gevolgd door zijn teamgenoten Castroneves en Briscoe.

Dario Franchitti pakte voor Ganassi de vierde startplaats, gevolgd door Takuma Sato die zijn beste kwalificatie uit zijn IndyCar-carriére reed. De winnaar op Watkins Glen van vorig jaar, Justin Wilson, eindigde op de zesde plaats.

Buiten de Fast Six was Adam Carroll, die in een auto van Andretti Autosport zijn debuut maakt, de verrassing van de kwalificatie. De Ier reed naar een tiende startpositie. Paul Tracy kwalificeerde zich voor zijn comeback-race als twaalfde, terwijl de Belg Bertrand Baguette de 23e tijd reed. Grootste tegenvaller van de kwalificatie was Danica Patrick die niet verder kwam dan de 21e positie. EJ Viso nam niet deel aan de kwalificatie na zijn harde crash in de tweede training eerder vandaag.
