Scott Dixon naar snelste tijd in openingstraining Toronto

Scott Dixon heeft vanmiddag de snelste tijd gereden in de eerste training op het stratencircuit van Toronto. De Nieuw-Zeelander reed de snelste tijd, ondanks een touché met Takuma Sato op het einde van de training.

Door de touché tussen Dixon en Sato spinde de Japanner en blokkeerde de weg voor Dixon. Hierachter reed Bertrand Baguette ook nog eens tegen de achterkant van Dixon's bolide aan. Hierdoor besloten de officials de sessie tot een vroeg einde te brengen en de finishvlag te zwaaien.

Sato kende sowieso geen al te beste dag, want al in zijn eerste rondje reed de Japanner tegen de muur aan. Hierbij raakte zijn achtervleugel beschadigd, maar al snel reed Sato weer zijn rondjes. Uiteindelijk kwam hij slechts tot de 23e tijd van 26 coureurs.

Lange tijd stonden de Ganassi- en Penske-coureurs bovenaan de tijdenlijst, maar op het einde van de sessie waagde iedereen nog een aanval. Scott Dixon's tijd van 1:03.9149 bleek uiteindelijk onaantastbaar, al kwam Justin Wilson nog wel dichtbij. De Dreyer & Reinbold-coureur kwam zes honderdsten tekort. Alex Tagliani was misschien wel dé verrassing uit de training met zijn knappe derde tijd.

Helio Castroneves was de snelste Penske-coureur op de vierde plaats, gevolgd door Dario Franchitti en het Andretti Autosport-duo Tony Kanaan en Ryan Hunter-Reay. Will Power reed op een ruime halve seconde achterstand de achtste tijd, EJ Viso de negende, terwijl Raphael Matos de top-tien afsloot. Graham Rahal, die zijn terugkeer maakt bij Newman/Haas, reed de dertiende tijd, vier plaatsten voor teammaat Hideki Mutoh. De Belg Bertrand Baguette reed een keurige achttiende tijd.
