Ryan Briscoe nipt voor Franchitti in afsluitende training

Ryan Briscoe heeft tijdens de tweede en laatste vrije training in Mid-Ohio de snelste tijd gereden. De Penske-coureur was slechts 0.0087 seconden sneller dan Ganassi-coureur Dario Franchitti. Kampioenschapsleider Will Power kende een forse crash.

Power raakte in zijn achtste rondje van de baan af en kwam hard achterwaarts de bandenstapels in. De Australiër liep op eigen kracht terug naar de pits, maar zijn autop was zwaar beschadigd. Het Penske-team is meteen aan de slag gegaan om de auto op te lappen voor de kwalificatie later vandaag.

Vooraan wisselden veel coureurs van snelste tijd, maar uiteindelijk was het Ryan Briscoe die bijna negen duizendsten sneller was dan Dario Franchitti. Het KV Racing-duo EJ Viso en Mario Moraes eindigden op een sterke derde en vierde plaats, terwijl teamgenoot Takuma Sato de achtste tijd reed.

Helio Castroneves reed naar de vijfde tijd, gevolgd door Ryan Hunter-Reay en Scott Dixon op bijna vier tienden achterstand. Justin Wilson eindigde als negende, gevolgd door de sterk rijdende Simona de Silvestro. Bertrand Baguette reed een keurige veertiende tijd, gevolgd door debutant JR Hildebrand.
