Dario Franchitti nipt voor rivaal Will Power in eerste training

Dario Franchitti is zijn jacht op de leider in het kampioenschap Will Power goed begonnen. Tijdens de eerste vrije training op de Infineon Raceway was de Schot vier duizendsten sneller dan Power. Alex Tagliani reed naar een zeer sterke derde tijd.

Power kwam 0.0041 seconden tekort op de snelste tijd van Franchitti, waarmee de strijd om de titel nu definitief is losgebarsten tussen beide heren. Achter het leidende duo kwam Alex Tagliani voor het kleine Fazzt-team naar een spectaculaire derde tijd, gevolgd door Scott Dixon en Justin Wilson.

Marco Andretti was de snelste coureur van Andretti Autosport op de zesde plaats, Graham Rahal reed voor Newman/Haas naar de zevende tijd. Ryan Briscoe kwam met zijn achtste tijd al ruim zes tienden tekort op de tijd van Franchitti, terwijl Dan Wheldon en Hideki Mutoh de top-tien completeerden.

JR Hildebrand, die pas zijn tweede IndyCar-weekend meemaakt, reed een mooie dertiende tijd. Betrand Baguette kwam tot een achttiende tijd, nog altijd twee posities beter dan Takuma Sato.
