Ryan Briscoe snelste tijdens eerste training Chicagoland

Ryan Briscoe heeft tijdens de eerste vrije training op de Chicagoland-oval de snelste tijd laten noteren. De Australiër was maar liefst 0.1496 seconden sneller dan Scott Dixon, terwijl Will Power een keurige derde tijd liet noteren.

Pas in de slotfase van de training kwam Briscoe naar de eerste plaats en verdreef daarmee Scott Dixon naar de tweede plaats. Kampioenschapsleider Will Power reed een keurige derde tijd, en bleef daarmee het kwartet auto's van Andretti Autosport voor. Marco Andretti was daarvan de snelste, gevolgd door Danica Patrick, Ryan Hunter-Reay en Tony Kanaan.

Helio Castroneves reed de achtste tijd, gevolgd door EJ Viso en Dario Franchitti, titelrivaal van Power. Graham Rahal kwam tot de elfde tijd, terwijl Bertrand Baguette een sterke vijftiende tijd reed.
