Ed Carpenter scoort eerste IndyCar-pole, Baguette spectaculair zesde

Ed Carpenter heeft vanavond op de Kentucky Speedway zijn allereerste pole position in de IndyCar Series gescoord. In een kwalificatie die vol met verrassingen zat was de Panther-coureur kampioenschapsleider Will Power te snel af.

De meeste coureurs van de topteams, zoals van Penske en Ganassi, stelden toch wel teleur in de kwalificatie. Will Power deed het nog goed en pakte de tweede startpositie achter Ed Carpenter. Zijn titelrivaal Dario Franchitti kwam niet verder dan de elfde positie. Het is pas de derde race die Carpenter dit seizoen rijdt en hij kende vorige week al een erg sterk weekend op Chicagoland waarbij hij bijna de overwinning pakte.

Panther Racing kende sowieso een erg sterke kwalificatiedag, waarbij Dan Wheldon de derde startpositie veroverde. Scott Dixon, die nog altijd een kleine kans heeft op de titel, reed naar de vierde tijd, gevolgd door Hideki Mutoh. Bertrand Baguette kende een spectaculaire kwalificatie en bekroonde deze met een prachtige zesde startplaats voor de race die morgenavond verreden wordt.

Helio Castroneves en Ryan Briscoe, die ook nog een rol spelen in de titelstrijd, kwamen tot de achtste en negende tijd. De kwalificatie van Andretti Autosport-coureurs Tony Kanaan en Ryan Hunter-Reay was er één om snel te vergeten. Kanaan raakte de muur even bij het uitkomen van Turn 2 en start de race als 26e, vlak voor zijn teamgenoot die al in Turn 1 in de muur crashte.
