Tony Kanaan na negen seizoenen gedwongen weg bij Andretti

Tony Kanaan zal op zoek moeten naar een nieuwe werkgever voor 2011. Zojuist is bekend geworden dat er komend seizoen geen plaats meer is voor de Braziliaan bij Andretti Autosport nadat sponsor 7-Eleven besloten heeft te stoppen met de sponsoring van Kanaan bij Andretti.

Eerder deze maand besloot 7-Eleven al de stekker uit het team te trekken wat betreft de sponsoring. Hierdoor kwam het stoeltje van Kanaan, die al jaren gesponsord word door 7-Eleven, al in het geding. Vandaag heeft Andretti Autosport officieël bevestigd dat Kanaan op zoek kan naar een ander team voor 2011 en dat zijn contract voor 2011 ontbonden is.

"Ik ben het niet eens met sommige dingen en het is erg teleurstellend, maar ik heb geen schuldgevoelens", vertelde Kanaan, die al vanaf 2003 bij het team van Mario Andretti reed. "Het is erg jammer, want ik had hier graag willen blijven racen. Ik heb negen seizoenen bij het team doorgebracht en ik heb er veel goede herinneringen aan over gehouden. Maar zo gaat het leven, ik zal op zoek moeten naar een ander team."

Kanaan kon in 2009 de overstap maken naar Ganassi, maar besloot uiteindelijk bij Andretti te blijven racen. Dario Franchitti maakte wel de overstap naar Ganassi en won zowel in 2009 als in 2010 de titel met het team. "Ik ben er nog steeds van overtuigd dat ik op dat moment de juiste beslissing heb genomen en dat ging niet over geldzaken. Het is nu makkelijk om te zeggen dat het een verkeerd besluit is geweest, maar ik was op dat moment gewoon loyaal naar mijn team. Zo ben ik nu eenmaal."

Andretti Autosport heeft momenteel alleen Danica Patrick en Marco Andretti vastgelegd voor 2011. Ook het stoeltje van Ryan Hunter-Reay is nog niet zeker vanwege sponsorperikelen.

Nu maar hopen dat Ganassi de middelen kan vinden om een 3de wagen in te zetten in 2011. Met Franchitti, Dixie en Kanaan zouden ze de 3 Penske\'s helemaal vermorzelen.

AGR verliest met Kanaan hun belangrijkste coureur. Andretti en Danica kopieeerde allebei zijn afstellingen en nu dat niet meer mogelijk is zie ik ze ver terugzakken.
