Ho-Pin Tung kanshebber op IndyCar-zitje na succesvolle test

Ho-Pin Tung lijkt zijn pijlen gezet te hebben op een carriére in Amerika. De Nederlandse Chinees heeft gisteren namelijk een test afgewerkt voor het Fazzt-team van Alex Tagliani. De Canadese teameigenaar is erg positief over het inzetten van Tung in de IndyCar Series voor 2011.

Tung kende een moeizaam seizoen in de GP2 dit jaar. Bij het team van DAMS bleven resultaten uit en tijdens de laatste race kwam de reserverijder van Renault in actie voor Racing Engineering. Tussendoor mistte Tung nog enkele races vanwege een blessure die hij over had gehouden aan een crash in Hongarije. Hij wist geen enkel punt te scoren in het afgelopen seizoen en lijkt een mogelijke Formule 1-droom nu uit zijn hoofd te hebben gezet.

Vrijdag testte Tung voor Fazzt op de Sebring International Speedway. Het team wil graag een tweede auto inzetten voor 2011 en ziet in Tung daar een ideale coureur voor. Hiermee hoopt het team én de sponsors, Bowers & Wilkins en BMW hebben Tung aanbevolen bij Fazzt, meer voet aan de grond te krijgen in China.

Als de testresultaten positief zijn gaat het team op zoek naar een sponsor en maakt Tung een grote kans om volgend seizoen zijn IndyCar-debuut te maken. "Dit is een geweldige kans voor alle Westerse merken, ook al is deze situatie wat anders omdat hij niet in China geboren is. Als Ho-Pin dat feit even kan laten vergeten, kan er voor de IndyCar Series een grote markt opengaan in China", vertelde Jeff Sofka, oprichter van Big Turn Asia.

Hij is echt ver gekomen door zijn nationaliteit. Want qua prestaties is hij echt niet bijzonder.

Ik dacht dat hij volgend jaar in de F1 wil rijden.... Vooral na z\'n goede resultaten in de GP2 dit jaar!

Zal dan ook wel weer 1 jaartje voor Ho-Pin Tung worden. Kijk maar hoe moeilijk Doornbos het heeft gehad. Ik schat Doornbos toch wat hoger in de Ho-Pin Tung.

Ik wens Ho-Pin Tung veel succes toe! Wel leuk een NL in de indy!

Iemand nog wat over Doornbos gehoord wat hij volgend jaar gaat doen?

Bobby wilde geloof ik weer in Amerika gaan racen, maar misschien doet ie ook wel weer een jaartje superleague (met hopelijk een beter resultaat en wat meer geluk)

@Beamer: 1. Iedereen wil wel F1 rijden, maar dat hangt of van talent af of van de beschikbare sponsorgelden. 2. Goede resultaten in de GP2 dit jaar ... ? Heb je GP2 uberhaupt wel gevolgd dit jaar ... ?! Niks goede resultaten dus ...
@ vjenne: Doornbos en Tung zijn totaal verschillende rijders en kunnen daardoor niet echt met elkaar vergeleken worden. Terwijl Tung heel gefocusd naar zijn doel rijdt, zie je Doornbos daarintegen vaak \'gekke\' dingen doen waardoor hij meer opvalt. Of hij daar uiteindelijk sneller mee is, is de vraag. Doornbos heeft nooit een kampioenschap gewonnen, Tung wel, 2 zelfs ... dat zegt - eigenlijk - genoeg ...
