IndyCar Series stelt deelnemerslimiet op 26 auto's

De IndyCar Series-organisatie heeft besloten dat er tijdens elk raceweekend een maximumaantal van 26 auto's mogen deelnemen. Alleen bij de Indy 500 én de seizoensfinale in Las Vegas mogen er meer auto's worden ingeschreven.

De eerste 24 startplaatsen zullen worden bepaald door een kwalificate, terwijl de andere twee posities 'vastgehouden' zullen worden voor recente kampioenen en daarna pas voor coureurs die in de top-22 staan van het kampioenschap.

De organisatie heeft eerder bij uitzondering meer dan 26 auto's per race toegelaten, maar IndyCar-baas Brian Bernhart vond het tijd om een limiet in te stellen. "Deze nieuwe procedure zal ervoor zorgen dat de fans alleen maar de beste coureurs en teams zullen zien in elke race van het seizoen. Veel van de circuits die we aandoen kunnen ook niet meer dan 26 auto's aan en tevens is dat onze limiet als we naar overzeese races gaan. Die twee factoren hebben dus tot dit besluit geleid", aldus Bernhart.
