Season Preview: Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines!

Dit weekend gaat niet alleen het nieuwe seizoen in de Formule 1 van start, ook de IndyCar Series beleeft haar seizoensouverture van 2011. Op het circuit van St. Petersburg beginnen 14 teams met in totaal 26 coureurs aan het nieuwe seizoen. F1Today.nl blikt vooruit op het jaar 2011.

Circuits
Er zullen dit seizoen zeventien races worden verreden in de IndyCar Series. Daarvan zijn er negen straten- en permanente circuits en acht ovals, waaronder de Indianapolis 500. Zoals gebruikelijk vind de meest prestigieuze race van het jaar bij IndyCar in het laatste weekend van mei plaats.

Het seizoen begint dit weekend echter in St. Petersburg. Vorig jaar greep Will Power net naast de titel, maar wist zich wel tot kampioen van de streetcourses te kronen. In 2010 won de Australiër de race in St. Petersburg dus hij zal dit succes graag willen herhalen.

Verder staat ook het stratencircuit van Sao Paulo weer op de kalender, waar vorig jaar de eerste spectaculaire race werd verreden. De Indy 500 opent het oval-seizoen met tussendoor nog enkele stratencircuit zoals Edmonton en de Infineon Raceway. Het seizoen zal worden afgesloten in Las Vegas op 16 oktober. Hierbij heeft de organisatie een beloning van 5 miljoen dollar uitgelooft als een 'gastrijder' de race op zijn naam weet te schrijven. Er zullen maximaal vijf extra coureurs worden toegelaten.

Kanshebbers
Ook dit jaar zijn er natuurlijk weer van tevoren enkele kanshebbers voor de IndyCar-titel aan te wijzen. Zo zal Will Power, die vorig jaar de races op de straten- en permanente circuits domineerde, het beter willen doen op de ovals en kan daardoor worden gezien als een serieuze titelkandidaat. Ook Penske-teamgenoten Helio Castroneves en Ryan Briscoe behoren natuurlijk tot de kanshebbers voor de titel.

Echter, misschien beschikt Chip Ganassi wel over de sterkste coureurs. Regerend kampioen Dario Franchitti gaat op jacht naar zijn vierde IndyCar-titel, voormalig kampioen Scott Dixon wil nieuw succes behalen en verder heeft Ganassi zich verzekerd van talenten Graham Rahal en Charlie Kimball. Waarschijnlijk zal het ook dit seizoen dus weer een tweestrijd worden tussen Penske en Ganasssi in de IndyCar Series 2011.
