Ryan Briscoe aan kop in warm-up, bolide Bourdais in vlammen

Ryan Briscoe heeft zich in de warm-up voor de IndyCar-race in St. Petersburg verzekerd van de beste tijd. De coureur van Team Penske was zo'n twee tienden sneller dan Justin Wilson en teamgenoot Helio Castroneves. Sebastien Bourdais is door en harde crash onzeker voor deelname aan de race later vandaag.

Briscoe reed in zijn laatste snelle ronde een 1:03.1384 en was daarmee 0.1753 seconden sneller dan Justin Wilson. De Dreyer & Reinbold-coureur was wederom sterk nadat hij in de kwalificatie al de zesde startpositie bemachtigde. Helio Castroneves volgde Wilson op de voet, terwijl Ryan Hunter-Reay de snelste Andretti Autosport-rijder was op de vierde plaats. Hij bleef Mike Conway en Dario Franchitti voor. Polesitter Will Power reed in de warm-up de zevende tijd.

Sebastien Bourdais eindigde als 25e en laatste, maar heeft dit vooral te danken aan een harde crash. De Fransman, die bezig is aan zijn eerste raceweekend in Amerika na zijn Formule 1-avontuur, raakte de muur in de snelste chicane van het circuit. De klap was blijkbaar zo hard dat de Dale Coyne-bolide vlam vatte. Bourdais kon wel ongedeerd weer uitstappen.

"Ik raakte licht de muur aan de binnenkant van de snelle chicane, waardoor de ophanging aan de rechterkant afbrak. Daarna was ik een passagier in mijn eigen auto en kwam hard tegen de muur tot stilstand. Het was een grote fout en de auto heeft veel schade opgelopen."
