Dario Franchitti verslaat Power voor eerste zege van 2011

Dario Franchitti heeft zojuist de eerste IndyCar-race van het seizoen op zijn naam geschreven. De Schot versloeg polesitter Will Power en eindigde ruim zeven seconden voor op de Penske-rijder. Tony Kanaan pakte een knappe derde plaats na een hevig gevecht met een sterk rijdende Simona de Silvestro.

De start van de race in St. Petersburg zorgde al voor heel wat drama bij enkele grote namen. Helio Castroneves remde te laat en raakte Marco Andretti die daardoor spinde. De auto van Andretti Autosport was onbestuurbaar en vloog over Scott Dixon waarna Andretti op de kop tot stilstand kwam. Mike Conway en Ryan Briscoe werden meegenomen in deze chaos en Oriol Servia kon niet meteen om de gecrashte auto's heen rijden.

Voor Andretti en teamgenoot Conway zat de race er al meteen op, terwijl Franchitti, Dixon en Briscoe lange tijd in de pits stonden voor reparaties. Niet alleen de start was spectaculair, in de eerste vijftien ronden werd de safety-car maar liefst viermaal naar buiten geroepen. Graham Rahal had een nieuwe achtervleugel nodig na een touché met Ana Beatriz. Verder kreeg Ryan Hunter-Reay het aan de stok met Simona de Silvestro die zich al had opgewerkt van de zeventiende startplaats naar de zevende stek.

Bij de vierde herstart nam De Silvestro veel risico en met één actie ging ze nog eens vijf coureurs voorbij. Daardoor kwam ze op de tweede positie terecht achter leider Dario Franchitti en vlak voor Tony Kanaan, Justin Wilson en polesitter Will Power die bij twee herstarts was teruggevallen.

Het kwam Franchitti wel goed uit dat De Silvestro de tweede positie had overgenomen, want zij hield op deze manier achtervolgers Kanaan, Wilson en Power op. Tijdens de eerste pitstops wist Power naar voren te komen en nam de tweede stek over. Hij kon echter niet op jacht naar leider Franchitti, want Kanaan aaste op de positie van Power. Pas toen Kanaan zelf onder druk kwam te staan van de sterk rijdende De Silvestro kon Power een gat slaan. Franchitti was echter al ver uit beeld en hij eindigde 7,1 seconden achter de Schot.

In de laatste paar ronden werd het nog spannend wie Franchitti en Power mocht gaan vergezellen op het podium. De Silvestro was namelijk nog niet helemaal klaar met Kanaan en in de laatste ronden werd het verschil nooit groter dan enkele tienden. Kanaan wist zijn KV-bolide echter breed te houden en scoort meteen in zijn eerste race voor zijn nieuwe werkgever een podiumplaats. De Silvestro eindigde als vierde en pakte hiermee haar beste resultaat in de IndyCar Series.

Takuma Sato kende ook een goede race en scoorde met de vijfde plaats ook het beste resultaat uit zijn carriére. Alex Tagliani en Raphael Matos drongen in de laatste ronden nog flink aan bij de Japanner, maar die gaf uiteindelijk geen krimp. Justin Wilson kwam, ondanks een goed begin van de race, slechts als tiende over de streep. Hij liep tijdens een gevecht met Oriol Servia een lekke band op en verloor hiermee veel tijd. Sebastien Bourdais was de enige coureur die niet aan de race kon beginnen. In de warm-up schreef hij zijn Dale Coyne-bolide af en de monteurs hadden niet genoeg tijd om deze weer op te bouwen.

Perfecte uitslag voor mij als Ganassi fan. Mooi gevecht ook voor de 3de plaats tussen Kanaan (die pas 6 dagen geleden een stoeltje wist te bemachtigen) en Simona de Silvestro. Het lijkt erop dat Danica Patrick haar positie als beste vrouwelijke rijder dit seizoen kan kwijtraken, goede race van haar.

  Haha daar heb je zeker gelijk in. Het is zeker niet moeders mooiste. Maar wel sympathiek. En ze heeft haar stoeltje iig niet te danken alleen omdat ze een mooi smoeltje heeft ;).

Leuke race op zich, einde was wel spannend met Kanaan en de Silvestro. Maar wat een gedoe de hele tijd op het begin, een stuk of 4 neutralisaties. :p

Misschien heb ik het verkeerd gezien, maar volgens mij was het Andretti zelf die de fout in ging en niet Castroneves...
