Conway stormt in Long Beach naar allereerste IndyCar-zege

Mike Conway veroverde in Long Beach zijn allereerste overwinning in de Amerikaanse IndyCar. Ryan Briscoe en Dario Franchitti moesten in Long Beach genoegen nemen met de tweede en derde plek. Debutant James Hinchcliffe reed naar een knappe vierde plaats.

Briscoe leek lange tijd met de zege aan de haal te gaan. De Penske-coureur had geluk met de timing van zijn eerste pitstop, vlak voor een neutralisatie, en klom daardoor van positie twaalf naar de leiding. Zelfs na de laatste serie pitstops voerde Briscoe nog het veld aan.

Bij de herstart na weer een neutralisatie gleed Helio Castroneves tegen Will Power aan, waardoor beide heren in de rondte gingen. Het leidde tot een kettingreactie achter hen, met coureurs die uitweken en elkaar raakten. Dat zorgde voor opnieuw een gele vlag.

Briscoe leidde bij de herstart nog, terwijl Conway zesde reed. Ryan Hunter-Reay viel weg uit de top zes door een versnellingsbakprobleem, maar de andere vier haalde Conway in rap tempo in. Eenmaal aan de leiding was Andretti-coureur los en nam hij een comfortabele voorsprong mee over de finish.
