Will Power pakt overwinning in straten van Sao Paulo

Will Power heeft zojuist zijn tweede overwinning van het seizoen gescoord. Op het stratencircuit van Sao Paulo was de Australiër Graham Rahal te snel af. Ryan Briscoe completeerde het podium.

Gisteren werd de race al gestart, maar net als vorig jaar kwam de regen met bakken uit de hemel. Na tien ronden werd de race definitief gestaakt en om 14:00 uur Nederlandse tijd vond vandaag de herstart plaats. De race vandaag begon ook op een nat circuit, dus de rijders gingen op regenbanden van start.

Will Power kwam goed weg bij de herstart en behield de eerste positie, gevolgd door Takuma Sato die meteen een positie had gewonnen. Al na enkele ronden werd de race onderbroken door een Full Course Yellow. Sebastien Bourdais, wiens seizoen nog niet lekker verloopt, parkeerde zijn bolide in de bandenstapels en was de eerste uitvaller van de dag.

Bij de herstart was Sato als beste weg en waagde meteen een succesvolle aanval in de eerste bocht op leider Power. De Japanner nam de leiding over en was de ronden daarna de snelste coureur op het circuit. De strategie van Sato en KV Racing pakte echter verkeerd uit. Op een gegeven moment lagen Sato en teamgenoot EJ Viso zelfs 1-2, nadat Will Power zijn stop had gemaakt. Sato wachtte een stuk langer met het maken van zijn stop, waardoor hij ver terugviel.

Ook Marco Andretti maakte een gok met zijn strategie. De Amerikaan lag even tweede, maar kwam door zijn late pitstop uiteindelijk als veertiende aan de finish. Sato werd deze terugval bespaard en eindigde als achtste. Will Power reed daardoor redelijk onbedreigd naar de zege, gevolgd door Graham Rahal. Ryan Briscoe eindigde als derde, gevolgd door Dario Franchitti. Oriol Servia reed wederom een sterke race en kwam als vijfde aan de finish.

Mike Conway, Justin Wilson en Takuma Sato completeerden de top acht. Helio Castroneves reed ook lange tijd rond aan de kop van het veld, maar door opnieuw een crash viel de Braziliaan vroegtijdig uit.
