Viervoudig winnaar AJ Foyt bestuurt pacecar tijdens Indy 500

Viervoudig Indy 500-winnaar AJ Foyt zal dit jaar de pacecar besturen tijdens de 100e editie van de Indianapolis 500. In eerste instantie had de organisatie Donald Trump gestrikt om de pacecar te besturen, maar deze haakte gisteren af.

Nadat Trump bekend maakte niet in actie te komen tijdens de Indy 500, besloot de organisatie AJ Foyt te strikken voor de rol als bestuurder van de pacecar. Foyt, die de prestigieuze race in 1961, 1964, 1967 en 1977 op zijn naam schreef, vertelde: "Ik had gehoopt nog deel te mogen nemen aan deze fantastische race die ik 50 jaar geleden voor het eerst won, maar om deze pacecar te mogen besturen is ook geweldig!"

"Nee serieus, racen is altijd een belangrijk deel geweest van mijn leven. Het is eigenlijk mijn leven. De Indianapolis 500 is de meest belangrijke race ter wereld en ik leefde er elk seizoen weer naar toe. Het was dan ook een geweldige eer toen mijn goede vriend Mari George me vroeg om tijdens de 100e editie van de race de pacecar te besturen."
