Penske slaat dubbelslag tijdens vrije training in Texas

Will Power heeft tijdens de vrije training in Texas de snelste tijd laten noteren. De kampioenschapsleider, in dienst van Penske, reed ruim een honderdste sneller dan teamgenoot Ryan Briscoe. Alex Lloyd en JR Hildebrand waren de verrassende namen in de top vier.

Power reed al vrij vroeg in de training een 24.3654 en werd niet meer achterhaald. Teamgenoot Briscoe kwam in de laatste minuten met een 24.3814 op de proppen en ging zo ten koste van Alex Lloyd naar de tweede stek. Lloyd was verrassend sterk voor Dale Coyne, terwijl ook rookie JR Hildebrand snel onderweg was. De coureur die twee weken geleden een overwinning tijdens de Indy 500 nog in rook op zag gaan door een crash in de laatste bocht, eindigde als vierde met een achterstand van ruim zeven honderdsten op Power.

Het team van Ganassi kende een mindere sessie. Dario Franchitti was de snelste man op de vijfde stek, terwijl Graham Rahal (twaalfde) en Scott Dixon (dertiende) niet verder kwamen dan een positie in het middenveld.
