De IndyCar-organisatie heeft de beruchte loterij voor het bepalen van de startgrid alweer afgeschaft. Er kwam na afloop van het raceweekend in Texas veel kritiek op deze vorm van 'kwalificeren', waarbij er lootjes werden getrokken om de startgrid voor de tweede race te bepalen.

Zo moest Dario Franchitti de tweede race vanaf 28e positie vertrekken, terwijl titelrivaal Will Power de derde startplaats toegekend kreeg. Na afloop uitte Franchitti meteen zijn kritiek op het format van de lootjes. "De startgrid bepalen vanuit een hoed met briefjes is echt belachelijk. We hadden ook een rad kunnen laten draaien om zo de racewinnaar te bepalen", vertelde Franchitti vorig weekend.

IndyCar-CEO Randy Bernand deelde de kritiek van Franchitti wel en heeft daarom besloten dat deze loterij niet meer terug zal keren in de toekomst. "Ik moet Dario wel gelijk geven", zei Bernand. "We willen niet dat de kwaliteit of uitslag door een loterij bepaald gaat worden. Een omgedraaide startgrid had bijvoorbeeld voor dezelfde spanning in de race kunnen zorgen."
