Pole-position van Sato in gevaar na crash in laatste training

Takuma Sato pakte rond middernacht zijn eerste pole position in de IndyCar Series. De Japanner versloeg op de Iowa Speedway de verrassend sterke Danica Patrick en mag voor het eerst op een oval vanaf de eerste stek vertrekken.

Echter, zijn pole position is nu in gevaar gekomen. Sato was tijdens de tweede en afsluitende training, die enkele uren na de kwalificatie nog gereden werd, snel onderweg. Daarbij kwam de Japanner echter ook in aanraking met Alex Tagliani, waarna hij in de muur knalde. Het is nog maar de vraag of KV Racing de bolide van Sato op tijd gerepareerd krijgt voor de race die komende nacht om 03:00 uur van start gaat.

In de training was Sato nog altijd snel en reed hij de derde tijd. Snelste man op de baan was verrassend Ed Carpenter. De Sarah Fisher-coureur eindigde met zijn 17.993 één duizendste voor kampioenschapsleider Will Power, die de race als zesde start. Tony Kanaan volgde zijn teammaat Sato op de vierde plaats, terwijl Dario Franchitti de vijfde tijd reed.

Ryan Briscoe pakte de zesde plaats met een achterstand van anderhalve tiende op Carpenter. Marco Andretti was met de zevende tijd de snelste coureur van Andretti Autosport, terwijl Danica Patrick niet verder kwam dan de negentiende tijd. Zij zal de race vannacht als tweede starten. Een sterke Ana Beatriz en JR Hildebrand completeerden de top tien. Scott Dixon, die zijn slechtste kwalificatie ooit reed op de Iowa Speedway met de 23e tijd, kwam nu ook niet verder dan de twaalfde plaats.

Sato heeft gelukkig de wedstrijd gehaald, maar wederom gecrashed. Mooie 2e plaats voor Tony Kanaan in zijn Lotus (gesponsorde wagen).
