Takuma Sato verslaat Power en pakt tweede pole position

Takuma Sato zal voor de tweede maal in zijn IndyCar-carriére een race vanaf de pole position mogen starten. Het is tevens zijn tweede pole van het seizoen en de eerste coureur die Will Power weet te verslaan in de kwalificatie op een stratencircuit. De Australiër eindigde als tweede.

Power, die dit seizoen in de kwalificaties op stratencircuits ongenaakbaar is, kwam vijf honderdsten tekort op de tijd van Sato in de Firestone Fast Six. Achter hem volgen titelrivalen en Ganassi-teamgenoten Scott Dixon en Dario Franchitti. Verder eindigde Sato's teamgenoot EJ Viso als vijfde en sloot Ryan Briscoe de top zes af.

Ryan Hunter-Reay en Oriol Servia, die de vierde startrij delen, klaagden na afloop over verkeer in de sessie. Verder was Helio Castroneves de enige Penske-rijder buiten de top zes en pakte de negende startplaats. Verder was het voor het Andretti Autosport-team een zeer slechte dag. Terwijl Hunter-Reay de zevende startplaats pakte, kwamen teamgenoten Marco Andretti, Mike Conway en Danica Patrick niet verder dan de 19e, 20e en 21e plaatsen.
