Hunter-Reay aan kop in tweede sessie, Wilson gewond bij crash

Ryan Hunter-Reay heeft vanmiddag de snelste tijd gereden in de tweede en afsluitende vrije training die in de slotfase werd opgeschrikt door een hevige crash van Justin Wilson. De Brit moest uit zijn auto geholpen worden en zijn toestand is nog niet duidelijk. Scott Dixon en Takuma Sato sloten de top drie af.

Wilson ging in de laatste minuten van de training te wijd door de eerste bocht en knalde tegen de muur aan. Zijn auto kwam uiteindelijk in de tweede bocht tot stilstand, waar hij op eigen kracht zijn stuurtje uit de cockpit haalde, maar de Brit wist niet zelfstandig de auto te verlaten. Met behulp van een blackboard en een nekbrace kwam Wilson zijn auto uit. Over zijn toestand is nog niks bekend.

Nadat de auto van Wilson was verwijderd, stonden er nog vier minuten op de klok. Hierin reed elke coureur nog een snelle ronde en was het uiteindelijk Ryan Hunter-Reay die de snelste coureur bleek te zijn. De 1:08.805 van de Amerikaanse coureur was 0.027 seconden sneller dan de beste tijd van Scott Dixon. Takuma Sato ging in zijn laatste ronde naar de derde plaats ten koste van Will Power.

Power, die momenteel de tweede plaats bezet in het kampioenschap, was ruim een tiende sneller dan teammaat Ryan Briscoe en kampioenschapsleider Dario Franchitti. JR. Hildebrand, Alex Tagliani, Graham Rahal en Tony Kanaan completeerden de top tien.

Update 19:18 uur: Justin Wilson is wakker en bij bewustzijn, zo werd zojuist bekend gemaakt vanuit het medisch centrum op het circuit in Mid-Ohio. Hij zal nu worden overgebracht naar het lokale ziekenhuis voor verdere onderzoeken. Wilson zal worden vervangen door Simon Pagenaud. De Fransman kwam eerder dit seizoen al eens in actie als vervanger van Ana Beatriz en testte al in Mid-Ohio.
