Scott Dixon leidt dubbelzege Ganassi met eerste zege van 2011

Scott Dixon heeft zojuist zijn eerste overwinning van het seizoen geboekt. De Nieuw-Zeelandse coureur was vandaag de sterkste op het circuit van Mid-Ohio. Teamgenoot en kampioenschapsleider Dario Franchitti eindigde als tweede, terwijl Ryan Hunter-Reay de laatste podiumplaats veiligstelde.

Dixon begon de race vanaf de pole position en behield de leidende positie ook vast. De Ganassi-coureur domineerde en kon de hele race controleren. In de 56e ronde verloor Dixon echter even kort de leiding, toen teamgenoot Dario Franchitti één ronde later zijn stop maakte en daardoor naar voren stootte.

Dixon ging Franchitti tijdens een neutralisatie voorbij, maar gaf deze plaats meteen weer terug. Meteen bij de herstart was Dixon wakker en waagde een succesvolle aanval bij Franchitti. De Schotse coureur liet zijn teamgenoot gemakkelijk passeren en zal uitermate tevreden zijn met de tweede plaats. Will Power, zijn naaste rivaal in het kampioenschap, had namelijk pech met een Full Course Yellow en eindigde slechts als zestiende.

Franchitti werd in de laatste ronden nog onder druk gezet door Ryan Hunter-Reay, die de Schot echter niet voorbij kon komen. Takuma Sato pakte een keurige vierde plaats aan de finish, gevolgd door teamgenoot Tony Kanaan en Alex Tagliani. De Canadese coureur was in de eerste ronde nog betrokken bij een incident met James Hinchcliffe, die daardoor ver terugviel.
