Will Power leidt Penske 1-2-3 in kwalificatie Sonoma

Will Power heeft zich vannacht verzekerd van de pole position voor de IndyCar-race op het circuit van Sonoma. De Australische coureur bleef in de Fast Six zijn teamgenoot Helio Castroneves bijna een halve seconde voor. Ryan Briscoe zorgde voor een 1-2-3 voor Penske in de kwalificatie.

Power heeft hiermee niet alleen de beste uitgangspositie voor de race, hij start ook nog een aantal plaatsen voor zijn titelconcurrent en leider in het kampioenschap Dario Franchitti. De Schot kwam niet verder dan de vierde plaats, achter de dominante Penske-auto's. Scott Dixon en James Hinchcliffe maakten de top zes compleet.

Mike Conway en Sebastien Bourdais haalden de Fast Six net niet en starten de race als zevende en achtste, voor EJ Viso en een sterk rijdende Ana Beatriz. In de groepsfase reed Beatriz zelfs de derde tijd. Ho-Pin Tung start zijn eerste IndyCar-race als 24e.
