Will Power verslaat Franchitti in uitgestelde eerste training

Nadat de trainingen in Baltimore tweemaal moesten worden uitgesteld, is de eerste sessie alsnog verreden. Will Power, die de laatste races op jacht is naar de koppositie in het kampioenschap, bleef zijn titelrivaal Dario Franchitti nipt voor. Helio Castroneves eindigde als derde.

Power en Franchitti wisselden elkaar de gehele training af aan de kop van de tijdenlijsten. Uiteindelijk was de Penske-coureur Power 0.078 seconden sneller dan Franchitti. Helio Castroneves volgde als derde, terwijl Ryan Hunter-Reay zijn Andretti-teamgenoot Mike Conway versloeg voor de vierde plaats.

Grahal Rahal eindigde als zesde, gevolgd door Takuma Sato, James Hinchcliffe, Tony Kanaan en Sebastien Bourdais op de tiende plaats. Scott Dixon was het eerste slachtoffer van de nieuwe, stoffige baan in Baltimore. De Nieuw-Zeelander crashte al na drie ronden en kon uitstappen.
