Will Power geeft het tempo aan in eerste training in Motegi

Will Power heeft in de eerste vrije training van de IndyCar op het circuit van Motegi de snelste tijd gerealiseerd. De Australiër noteerde een 1:39.4745 in Japan en was daarmee een dikke tiende sneller dan Penske-teamgenoot Helio Castroneves.

James Hinchcliffe van Newman/Haas voorkwam een top drie met Penske-coureurs door zich tussen Castroneves en Ryan Briscoe op plek drie te nestelen. Joao Paulo de Oliveira, Formule Nippon-rijder en voor deze gelegenheid coureur van Conquest Racing, klokte een nette achtste tijd bij zijn eerste kennismaking met de IndyCar. De rij wordt gesloten door drie vrouwen. Danica Patrick, Simona de Silvestro en Ana Beatriz eindigden onderaan het tijdenlijstje.
